What you’re looking at here is a very interesting two photos same day same location the only difference is Sal change the masks on the wall and the floor this was his mask studio in 1949 when he traveled with the world of mirth a Bizzarre traveling carnival This was his own trailer that opened up he would do mind reading acts out of it it would close down at night so he could sleep in it and have a little mask parties with the midgets and burlesque girls he told me some crazy stories Anyway this photo is from 1949 like I said but all those masks on the wall were made in the mid 30s but the New York worlds fair and 1939 sal traveled with this carnival for two years even did a magazine for them there’s going to be some crazy chapters about this place in our book in the Terracina Masquerade
Over 20 years ago I inherited my great uncle Sal‘s art estate over 25,000 large format negatives glass slides and images then there was the boxes of Published stories articles about him let’s not forget about the 110 giant masks that he made his lifetime most of those or 2 foot tall weighing in at 40 pounds each they’re the ones with the special ingredients in the papier-mâché Haitian voodoo dust, pyramid scrapings from Egypt, Secret potions from around the world anyway the first couple years I did a quick edit on the important images the negatives I need to start working on his life story negatives like this I put aside I knew one day I was going to have fun with them this was some party in the 60s it might’ve been a relatives party because the kids are young the negatives I like to work on our from the late 20s through the 40s
Love this photo for 100 reasons the year 1991 somehow the city of Key West Florida boats my grandfather in as the mayor that’s a miracle right there the guy on the right my dad a real authentic New Jersey Goodfella he actually knows some of those original guys from the movie and I don’t mean the actors the maniac in the middle my grandfather the famous captain Tony I am his oldest grandson I got to work for him for seven years no college on planet earth could’ve given me the education that he gave me now here’s the interesting part the guy in the left was Captain Tony’s childhood friend growing up in the 20s big Red Hardie when my grandfather fled New Jersey to hide out in Key West in 1947 Red Ended up marrying my grandmother captain Tony’s first wife so you see I had a grandfather in New Jersey and then when I turn 20 captain Tony took over these are my three mentors
I want to apologize for bragging an coming off very cocky and arrogant But it’s the only way I could describe what went on in my 42 years of being a published Photographer I have racked up some pretty high numbers publishing over 1200 exotic dancers in three different magazines back in the day also a couple hundred models with advertisements as far as portfolios around 300 nude and semi nude And here’s the beauty of it if you go to my digital library you will see 65,000 images that I edited out of a quarter of 1 million it’s an art project still in the works they’re all my photographs I have met one photographer yet Who could match these numbers
I was very fortunate to be one of the photographers hired for Calvin Klein‘s birthday party around 12 years ago the funny thing is my great uncle Sal was friends with him back in Key West we had one of the most beautiful key west houses This is one of the portraits I shot there I don’t know if it was a woman or a man but when I asked to take the photo I got this look
